Q: What is encaustic painting?

A: Encaustic painting has a long history, dating back to the 5th Century B.C. The word encaustic means to burn in, which refers to the process of fusing the layers of wax with heat.

Encaustic paintings are made with many layers of beeswax, damar resin (a natural tree sap that acts as a hardening agent), and pigments. I paint in so many layers I can’t count them, fusing each layer with heat. Then I carefully scrape parts of it away to see what is revealed.

With this ancient medium, I can create an incredible depth and a wide variety of surfaces, which along with the physicality of the creative process, is reminiscent of the sculpture practice I enjoyed in my early career.
