How a Sunset Shows Up in My Studio!

I thought this month you might like to see some pieces of my work which are so brand new that I’m not exactly sure whether they are finished!

Dear Friends,

I hope that by the time you read this, you are happily adjusted to the quickened pace of the Fall season. I always look forward in the summer months to more time for painting and the usual relaxed, warm-weather visits with friends and family, and this year was no exception. Truthfully, I could use another month of that type of pace, but alas!

I thought this month you might like to see some pieces of my work which are so brand new that I’m not exactly sure whether they are finished!

My inspiration was the uniquely beautiful palette of a Grecian sunset seen during a trip in July.

I’ve titled them Hesperides I, II and III after the Greek word for “Daughters of Evening.” According to Greek Mythology these were the clear-voiced maidens who guarded the tree bearing golden apples that Gaea gave to Hera at her marriage to Zeus.

For the painting Hesperides I, I was inspired to depict the angles and movement that I saw in the cloud formations.

In this series of landscapes, I found it particularly challenging to integrate the strong contrasting colors within the compositions…

Summertime!

I thought this month you might like to see some pieces of my work which are so brand new that I’m not exactly sure whether they are finished!

Dear Friends,

Do you love the summertime as much as I do?

Of course, there are many things to love about the season, but as an artist I find the landscapes of earth, sea and sky on those warm and lovely summer days provide endless inspiration that fuels my work.

I’ve tried painting “en plein air” and found it far too distracting. I work best when peacefully ensconced in my studio, with nothing else but the materials in front of me, the process of the way they work with and for me, and my memories and emotions to guide me.

Here I present to you a selection of encaustic wax pieces I call my “Landscapes.”

You’ll find in each one the horizontal aspect of a landscape, with lines intentionally imperfect, and lots of COLOR: earthy greens and browns, ethereal blues, sunny yellows, and the many pinky tones of a remembered sunset.

Each piece represents my memories of the imperfect beauty of a perfect summer’s day. My wish is that many of those days are soon coming your way!

All images shown are original works available for sale. Please write to me for prices, or if you are local, to arrange a visit to my studio in East Hampton. View many more pieces on my website.

The Joy of Color!

I thought this month you might like to see some pieces of my work which are so brand new that I’m not exactly sure whether they are finished!

“Colour is a power which directly influences the soul.” ― Wassily Kandinsky

Dear Friends,

The first time I remember having intense feelings around color, I was about six years old, and someone had generously treated me to a glorious box of 164 Crayola crayons. I remember gazing at them in awe, for what seemed a long time, at the absolute splendor of row upon row of luscious hues, hesitant to remove even one, lest I break the spell.

Since childhood, I’ve always looked forward to springtime for the emergence of bright, cheerful colors and warm sunny days. Bright yellow forsythia against a cobalt sky, a riot of purple and yellow pansies, and the candy colors of French macarons piled in a Madison Avenue gourmet shop window just visually excite me. They can spark an intense craving to go into my studio and put down layer after layer of rich color onto paper, board, or canvas.

And then my greatest hope is to convey some of that awe, joy, and intense emotion from my paintings to YOU!

This week I am sharing some of my latest expressions of color, all are encaustic wax pieces, and available for sale as original artwork, shown on my website (write to me for prices), and in limited edition fine art giclée prints, available in my website print shop. (In order to make my art more accessible, I’m increasing the special pricing discount to 25% through Mother’s Day, May 8th.)

I hope you like them!
